Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA
I’m actually surprised by how much I like this product. I expected mediocrity and it surpassed that immediately.
pH and comparison to Good Genes
The pH in this product is 3.6, so it’s more acidic than the skin’s pH (women-4-5, men-5-6). But it’s not acidic enough to really sting or cause discomfort. The lower the pH, the more free (active) acid there is in a product to work its magic. With 10% lactic Acid, the free acid works out to 6.45%. I’ve been alternating this product with Sunday Riley Good Genes, which contains 5% lactic acid with a pH of 2.6, resulting in free acid of 4.93%. Accordingly, the Ordinary’s 10% lactic acid formulation is stronger than Good Genes.
So, what’s Lactic Acid?
Lactic Acid is a large acid molecule that both exfoliates the top layer of AND acts as a humectant, drawing hydrating to the outermost skin layers. Lactic Acid dissolves the “glue” that holds the outer skin cells together. It’s not as irritating as many Glycolic Acids.
Other notable ingredients
Glycerin-naturally present in skin, a humectant that attracts water to skin’s upper layer
Propanediol-a natural solvent, emollient, preservative, humectant and absorption enhancer
Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer-HA that has been altered to form an infinite sort of HA mesh and purported to hold up to five times the hydration/water of normal HA
Tasmannia Lanceolota Fruit/Leaf Extracts-this berry is actually fantastic! It has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antimicrobial properties, in addition to being a strong antioxidant
Even better, for the price of one bottle of Good Genes, one could buy 10-15 bottles of The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid.
I wish the pH was a bit lower.
