Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15

product review positives
🌱 Neutrogena is a legacy brand from the 30s, which was bought out becoming a sub-brand of Johnson&Johnson. They became popular in the 90s for their acne products which were, quite frankly, absolutely awful. Childhood me still remembers that oil-free acne wash packed with stinging menthol that left my skin so dry and tight. Thankfully, they have come a long way with their formulas, and I hope they learn from the high standards set by Korean beauty. The competition is stiff! 🌱 Claims: Alcohol-free, Sulfate-free, Allergen-free**, Fragrance-free**, Non-comedogenic, Oil-free, Eczema-Safe 🌱 Lightweight lotion keeps skin moisturized all day 🌱 Broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF15 sunscreens help prevent premature signs of aging caused by everyday exposure to sun’s damaging rays, when used as directed with other sun protection measures** 🌱 Oil-free formula absorbs quickly and won’t clog pores 🌱 Ph: Unknown 🌱 Key Ingredients: This is a chemical sunscreen with four UV filters. Octisalate (5%) Oxybenzone (4%) Octocrylene (3%) Avobenzone (1.5%) 🌱 Texture: A medium-thickness cream, neither runny nor thick. Spreads easily without streaking or pilling. 🌱 Scent: A very generic floral powdery smell, not really necessary. 🌱 Price: $21CA for 118mL or $0.18/mL A little pricey, considering you’re not getting anything other than bare-bones sunscreen. 🌱 Application: This sunscreen spreads and absorbs quite well and as a chemical sunscreen, does not leave a white cast. I wouldn’t describe the finish as greasy since there is no oil in the formula, but it also does not dry down matte. It looks somewhat shiny on the skin, and I need to temper it down with a bit of powder to finish. Considering this formula is only SPF15 with no PA listing, you are really selling yourself short if you’re not reapplying this every 5 minutes. 🌱 Packaging: An opaque plastic bottle with a pump that protects the formula from UV light. Pump dispenses an appropriate amount. 🌱 Accessibility: The pump has a twist-lock to prevent accidental spillage, but doesn’t come with a cap. 🌱 Sustainability: This bottle can be recycled. It could be refilled if available. 🌱🚫 NOT reef-safe for waterway swimming🚫🌱
product review negatives
Picky lists this product as fragrance and allergen free, but it has Dimethyl Heptenal, and Ethylene Brassylate, two synthetic fragrances. One of the UV filters, Oxybenzone, is listed by Skin Deep as an irritant and endocrine disruptor with an 8/10 hazard rating. Oxybenzone is an effective UV filter, but it also carries some negatives with it. Could Neutrogena reformulate this with better efficacy and less irritation? The problem with judging western sunscreens is that even when you find a decent one by western standards, all the Asian sunscreens are simply in another league. North America is just waking up to the need to actually wear SPF after decades of sun-worship, and the cosmetics companies here simply haven’t caught up. Notice how in their claims, Neutrogena says “provides effective sun protection along with other methods?” That’s like putting an orange next to a bowl of cereal and saying “part of a complete breakfast.” If you need to wear a hat and parasol, is your sunscreen really effective? If you’re trapped in a small town in Canada with only a Shoppers or grocery store for skincare options, this sunscreen is better than nothing. But even the cheapest drugstore sunscreen from Korea will have extras and skin-loving extracts like Cica or Vitamins in it. They just don’t compare. Neutrogena, take note! Once these companies enter Canada and capture the market, your outdated, bare-bones formulas simply won’t hold up anymore.
