My retinoid journey 🧴🚲

I started using retinoids when I turned 25, mainly for well-aging purposes. Here's a list of all the retinoids I have tried thus far in my 3 years retinoid journey. Just to recap, (in case anyone is confused with all the different terms) retinoid is the umbrella term for the many derivatives of Vitamin A. Retinyl esters, retinol, retinaldehyde (retinAl), adapalene and retinoic acid are all different types of retinoids. Don't confuse them, alright? 😉 ☂️ Retinoid / | | \ Retinyl esters Retinol Retinal Retinoic acid

Retinol 0.2% in Squalane

My first retinol! Since I was just starting retinol at the time, I decided to go for a low strength 0.2% retinol first to slowly introduce it to my skin and to avoid possible irritations. I didn't experience any irritation with this and since it contains squalane, it wasn't drying on the skin. However, because of that it can also feel a bit greasy on my oily skin. It also has a short PAO (Period After Opening) so you need to use it up within 3 months.

Definitely beginner friendly retinol! This is my first retinol product and I started my retinol journey on my 25th birthday 🤣 It did not cause me irritation at all! Even so, I still started introducing it slowly in my routine and shortly after I am able to wear it daily with no issues. My skin typically feels plump and soft the following day. As for acne and anti-aging, I did not notice much effects possibly because it requires more time and this product however has such a short shelf life.

Retinol 2.5% Serum + Vitamin E

After that I went for the Retinol 2.5% from Cos de Baha 😂 It does seem like a huge jump from the previous 0.2%, but it actually feels gentle on my skin and didn't cause any irritation. I like this more than The Ordinary as it has a better texture (not as greasy) and has a normal PAO of 12 months.

Grasa/Resistente

A high-strength Korean retinol serum that requires no prescription to use. 🧴 Key Ingredients. Pure Retinol 2.5%, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, B3 (Niacinamide). The brand claims it promotes ‘intensive wrinkle care’. (Putting this here from the comments, from someone who works in the cosmetic industry: “It is 1 form of retinoid and not pure retinol at 2.5% because the designed maximum traction allowed is 1%. Unfortunately, many brands mislead customers with misleading claims. They often use the term retinol with 1 high percentage when there is 1 percentage retinal or encapsulated retinol which is not pure retinol.”) 💧Form & Fragrance. A 30 mL light amber liquid in an opaque bottle dispensed using a dropper. Consistency is runny. Free from paraben, gluten, formaldehyde, sulfate, artificial color, and fragrance. 🙋🏽 Experience. Spreading this gives the feeling of putting on a thin layer of oil on skin as it glides smoothly. The brand claims it is free from oils. Just the same, I personally think that is a positive point. It is fragrance-free, but I could tell this has a light scent like maybe aloe. Patch test is important since it has a high amount of retinol at 2.5%. I started slowly on it (every 3 days, then every 2 days, until it became nightly) and have been using it for six months now and counting, and in all that time it did not irritate my skin. But to err on the side of caution I would advise against having this by first-time retinoid users. Milder percentage ranging from 0.1-0.3% are already potent and effective as backed by studies and board-certified derms. I chose to give this a try because it is a Korean product and the price is absolutely afforable. The days of glow it gave me the first few weeks as I awoke from night sleep was desirable. On the third month I thought the effect plateaued or maybe I got used to it that it felt like it. Retinoid is a photosensitive substance so while using it exposure to sunlight or UV rays can cause skin irritation. Be sure to wear sunscreen daily. 💲 Price. ₱457 ($8.24~) for 30 mL bottle from Cos de Baha official store in Lazada PH. An afforable Korean product option compared to known US brands offering the same active that’s about up to seven times this price.

The Retinol 0.5 Serum

My third retinol. This Cosrx Retinol 0.5 is actually a retinol oil, so it has a greasy, dry oil texture. It was okay, my skin always looks and feels plump the next day, but somehow I always get new pimples whenever I used it. This retinol also has a short PAO of 3 months and needs to be refrigerated. I think this would suit dry skin types best

Cosrx The Retinol 0.5 oil ✨️What it is Featuring a high concentration of 0.5% pure retinol, this powerful oil targets skin aging signs such as sagginess, fine lines, and wrinkles. ✨️Star ingredients 0.5% Pure retinol 91%Squalene Super vitamin E (Tocotrienol) ✨️My Experience The box itself is pretty elegant and discreet. This retinol oil is in a large bottle and doesn't really have much of a fragrance. While there is a faint oil or medicinal smell, it is acceptable. This has both positive and negative aspects. Retinol (Vitamin A) and the "super Vit E" designation are antioxidants. Antioxidants, by definition, are unstable. This means they must be packaged in a way that protects them from light and air, or they will lose potency and become useless. The dark bottle is nice, and it says to keep it in the fridge after opening, so that's a plus. However, because it is in a dropper bottle, the contents are constantly exposed to light and air when the dropper is removed. This has a very good formula, so it's not a deal breaker at this price point. Simply transfer it to an airtight pump bottle to preserve its potency and efficacy. Capric/caprylic triglyceride, derived from coconut oil, is also included in the formula. For some people, this ingredient may be comedogenic. If you're taking a retinoid for acne, avoid this product or use it with caution and keep an eye out for breakouts. If you are not prone to acne and are using this for antiaging purposes, you should be fine. Always perform a patch test and proceed slowly. Don't forget to always wear an SPF of at least 30. All in all, I like how simple it is to apply this oil. It is not irritating, and it aids in the prevention of retinoid dryness. Anyway, I was concerned that it would be too greasy, but to my surprise, the oil absorbed into my skin and wasn't as bad as I'd anticipated. There was still oil present, but it was not greasy. I wore it overnight and woke up with soft, hydrated skin that was free of oil and greasiness.

Retinol Intense Advanced Triple Action Eye Cream

A decent retinol eye cream for the under eyes. Light, gel-cream texture with a mild floral scent. Didn't cause milia which is great and didn't irritate my eyes either 👍🏼

Revive Eye Serum Ginseng + Retinal

An upgrade! From retinOl to retinAl 🆙️ Retinal is more effective and generally less irritating than retinol. This one by BOJ is also one of the most affordable retinal in the market. Although it's called an eye serum, it actually has a light, creamy texture and can also be used for the whole face as well. It's not irritating, doesn't feel greasy and is really lightweight. I like this one a lot!

🌸 review time 🌸 @beautyofjoseon_official 's Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal #boj_review 🌱 Natural clean beauty ✅ I'm so glad this is my first eye cream and first retinoids product ever tried and it didn't disappoint! Indeed I've seen driven results in smoothing the newly formed eye wrinkles and hydrates the sensitive skin around the eyes so well. So here's my honest review 👀: Key ingredients: - Ginseng Root Extract 10% - Retinal Liposome 2% (a more stabilised form of Vit A and causes less irritation) It is written as an eye-serum, but the texture is very creamy, spreadable and very hydrating 💦 It has a typical yellow colour of retinoids and unscented. As a first time retinal user so I just use it every other day to minimise the irritation. However the result was quite surprising! I have servere postpartum sleep deprivation and this rescued my panda-look eyes. The wrinkles are soothed and faded noticably and the dark circles did improve a bit after 2 weeks (I will need more time for a final confirmation 😉) Overall this is very worth buying and I was lucky I had a chance to get it newly released! The price is super affordable too and the packaging is lovely like always! #pickyreview #gopicky #eyecream #eyeserum #skincaredaily #skincareaddict #skincarelover #skincarereview #skincareblogger #skincareroutine #skincarecommunity #kbeauty #kbeautyreview #holygrail #beautybloggers #beautyblog #glowingskin #glowyskin #glowyskingoals #cleanbeauty #veganskincare #instaskincare #asianskincare #sensitiveskin #dryskin #skincaretips

Adapalene 0.1% Gel

Out of all the retinoids I've tried, adapalene is my absolute favourite and the most effective out of all! Cleared my skin of hormonal cystic acne and helped with reducing hyperpigmentation 💗 I'm currently on my second tube already and will continue to repurchase! Adapalene is a topical retinoid that is approved for the treatment of acne. So if your concern is more on treating acne, then adapalene is the one for you!

This 0.1% adapalene gel is by far the only topical product that managed to reduce and pretty much cleared up my hormonal acne 🤌 I hardly get any of those blind, under-the-skin, cystic acne around my jaw area anymore (which I used to get every month), and when I do get them, its only like 1 or 2 pimples and they heal a lot faster than before. Truly a saviour and my holy grail 👑🏆 I'm on my second tube already. I started in January 2023, using it every other night. On the second month onwards, I increased it to every night, which I continued until this day. I saw results on the third month onwards (tbh I started seeing some minor improvements even before that). Did I purge? Fortunately, I didn't. Maybe it's because I started slow and really took great care to moisturize, apply sunscreen and temporarily stopped all exfoliants for the first few months. But my skin did become more sensitive than usual (it's usually very resilient), a few products that I've been using stung, when it never did before. Other than that, my adapalene journey is pretty much smooth-sailing! 💗 Definitely the best decision I made in 2023 🤝💯 I will continue to repurchase...until I decide to upgrade to tretinoin of course 🤭👀
