100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil
🌱 The Ordinary is a sub-brand of Canadian cosmetics company Deciem. They provide a wide range of affordable minimalist formulas to mix and match or supplement your current skincare regimen.
🌱 Claims: Alcohol-free, Paraben-free, Silicone-free, Sulfate-free, Allergen-free, Cruelty-free, Fragrance-free, Pregnancy-friendly, Non-comedogenic, Eczema-Safe
Targets signs of ageing, dullness, dryness
🌱 Key ingredients: This product has only one ingredient. Rosa Canina seed oil.
The keyword here is “canina”. You might think this is a flowery essential oil from a big smelly rose. However, this product is from the seed, not the flower. And the flower is the dog rose. You might see this plant used as shrubbery around buildings in temperate climates. It produces a lot of small roses, and when they die off, the hip or fruit is then collected. The fruit of the rose plant is actually very high in nutrients and vitamin C. A good choice for skincare if the company can process the raw ingredient correctly.
🌱 Negatives: For better or worse, this product has NO preservatives in it. Be mindful of the date you open it, and be careful not to touch the dropper directly on your skin, as this will contaminate the bottle with bacteria.
🌱 Texture: A very light oil with a golden tint.
🌱 Scent: This oil comes with its own plantlike scent. It is not unpleasant, but you cannot use the smell to indicate rancidity. Write the date of opening on the bottle somewhere.
🌱 Price: $10.70CA for 30mL or $0.36 / mL. Very affordable, considering you only need a drop or two for your whole face.
🌱 Application: This is what is considered to be a “dry oil” that sinks easily into skin and does not leave a greasy feeling. Even those with oily and acne-prone skin will enjoy the benefits that rosehip oil delivers.
🌱 I have used this oil to help with post-inflammatory marks and to reduce scarring from hormonal acne. It plays well with hydrating products like hyaluronic acid for dry skin, combining hydration and oil restoration for dry skin. If I damage my barrier from over-exfoliating, this is the product I turn to for calm restoration.
🌱 I love this oil in the winter, as it provides deep, protective moisturization without a thick, heavy layer like ceramide creams. However, as a facial oil, do not mix this with silicone-based cosmetics, as oil will break down the silicone emulsions.
🌱 Packaging: The Ordinary packages their products in tinted glass bottles that protect them from UV light. This product would probably be better with an airtight pump since it has no preservatives and the dropper can become dirty very easily. But TO wants to keep costs as low as possible while providing sustainable packaging, so this is a compromise.
🌱 Accessibility: The dropper bottles can be a bit clumsy, but the lids have texture bumps, so you can use a towel to open them if they are stuck tight.
🌱 Sustainability: TO uses very sustainable packaging methods by homogenising their bottles.
🌱 Overall: I would recommend this product to pretty much everyone to try at least once. It’s less of a hyped-up holy grail, than a quiet, mature formula doing its responsible thing in the background. This is a support product, not the star of the show, and it does its job incredibly well.
🌱 You need so little, this product might outlast its expiry date.
🌱 No preservatives means it is susceptible to contamination. Store your bottle correctly.
Honestly, very little to criticize.

Mine went off *after* the 6 month date, but it was more like I just wasn't able to use it all up in time.
