Skin barrier repair really can be tricky sometimes, specially when the weather is as unpredictable as fall. So here’s a little helper to get you started if you have oily to very-oily skin.

Key ingredients in this routine: 
• Niacinamide
• Ceramides
• Green Tea
• Propolis
• Panthenol

• Zinc PCA

Key textures: watery, lightweight, gel-like.

1. @bliss Niacinamide Disappearing Act Toner: a very gentle and slightly hydrating toner, with a very watery texture and w/o alcohol. Niacinamide in this helps strengthen the skin barrier, green tea soothes, while witch hazel and zinc balance sebum levels.

2. @paulaschoice Hyaluronic Acid Booster: Rich in skin-loving cermides and panthenol to soothe and strengthen the skin barrier, well as hyaluronic acid and adenosine to plump up the skin.

3. @bywishtrend Polyphenols in Propolis 15% Ampoule: Rich in propolis, known to reduce skin inflammation, heal pimples and increase the moisture content. Also contains zinc to balance sebum levels and 59% Houttuynia Cordata extract to calm and soothe the skin.

4. @klairs.canada Fundamental Water 
Gel Cream: A medley of skin-loving ingredients like green tea, panthenol, centella, mugwort and rice for barrier healing+soothing. The texture is very lightweight, kinda like a hybrid between a milk and a gel. So cool!

Experience: This is my second pack of this creamy goodness. Yes, I went ahead and bought another one myself! I loved using this wash off mask in the shower, as well as before special events. The rice granules form the gentlest physical exfoliant, while the hydrating rice water, glycerin and vitamin e nourish the skin, leaving me with an insane glow!

The good:
• Gentle exfoliation
• Leaves skin with a subtle glow
• Texture improved upon repeated use
• Smells absolutely delicious (earthy, rich freshly cooked rice smell! 😍)
• A little goes a long way
• Super affordable compared to luxury face masks ($18.99/100ml)
• Not a drying mask by any means, ideal for dry to combo skin types
• Very soothing to the skin

The bad:
• The physical exfoliation might not be ideal for sensitive skin types
• Not the prettiest packaging for the vanity (a plastic pouch), but very environmentally conscious!

House of Dohwa Rice Wash Off Mask Review

Coming up with two more barrier supporting routine, this time for sensitised skin! 💕

Sensitisation is a skin condition that comes with having a broken skin barrier. It’s that stinging or burning sensation when things that didn’t bother your skin before (like fragrance, EOs, alchohol) start stinging the life out of your skin. It is NOT the same as sensitive skin (which is a skin type, not a condition). Adding an oil according to your skin type often helps with this, as the oil seals moisture and allows the skin to heal itself.

Routine 1: Sensitised Combo Skin

1. @onething_official Artemisia Capillaris Extract: One-ingredient toner, instantly soothing to the skin, & comes in a great value size ($25/300 ml).

2. @cocokind ceramide barrier serum: literally liquid gold! Has 5 types of ceramides, aloe, glycerin, arginine & beta-glucan for ultimate barrier care. 🙌🏼

3. @cerave_canada moisturising cream: A good trusty option w/ 3 essential ceramides & HA. Is affordable and easily accessible! 

4. @indeedlabs vegan squalane oil: Great starting oil if you’re not used to the feeling of an oil on your face. Very lightweight and doesn’t clog pores.

Routine 2: Sensitised Oily Skin 

1. @bliss niacinamide toner: slightly hydrating, very lightweight, balanced sebum level while strengthening skin barrier.

2. @cocokind ceramide barrier serum

3. @theinkeylist multi-biotic: Very lightweight lotion that’s microbiome friendly. Has oat and green tea for extra soothing!

4. @heybudskincare australian hemp oil: Hemp is known to soothe and nourish the skin w/o clogging the pores or making you feel bogged down. This has a whole host of skin-loving oils alongside hemp, like camellia oil, macadamia oil, Jojoba oil, rosehip oil, tamanu oil, seabuckthorn oil & kakadu plum.

Brand: 
An eco-friendly korean brand specialising in effective, transparent formulas with simplistic packaging and renown ingredients. Reminds me of the deciem brands but with elegant korean formulations.

Products: (+ review)

1. White Collagen Cleansing Foam: While having collagen in a diet can be helpful, it’s topical benefits aren’t backed by many studies. This cleanser has a rich lather than felt a little stripping for my skin. I like that there’s 1% niacinamide in this, making it better suited for oilier skin types.

2. Vitamin B5+ Bifida Toner: Y’all know I love a good panthenol rich product in my routine. Fermented skincare helps actives penetrate better too. With 1% panthenol and 3% bifida fermentation lysate, this toner is hydrating and easy to dispense. However, there’s a strong fragrance in this that my face just can’t tolerate. 😭

3. Idebenone + Blackberry complex serum: Now we’re getting into the good stuff! This serum is rich in antioxidants from blueberry and ubiquinone, and has arginine for a dose of anti-aging benefits. I can’t attest to the latter claim yet, but I’ve definitely been enjoying adding this to my routine in place of an antioxidant serum. It’s hydrating and emollient too, so great for winter! 4. Idebenone Blackberry Intense Cream: This. Cream. Is. A. Dream. Such a rich buttery texture! (Swipe for texture) The first night I used this, I was so shocked because I didn’t expect it to be so emollient yet not feel greasy or tacky on the skin. It seals everything in and prevents TEWL (transepidermal water-loss) throughout the night. The ingredients list is stellar with 63% blackberry complex, ubiquinone, cholesterol, ceramides, fatty acids, panthenol & hyaluronic acid. 😍It can very well go up against more high-end moisturisers (and beat them)!

I wish it came in a bigger bottle because I find myself needed a refill every month or so.

I had to get my hands on this one because: 1) The texture is thick the way I like it, and 2) NIACINAMIDE!

I’ve been using it for almost 3 weeks now, and it does not disappoint! I find it super nourishing to use right after waking up, and a little goes a long way with this beautiful clear toner.

It also has vitamin C, licorice root and arbutin to fade hyperpigmentation from acne scars, and I’m all for it.

This serum features tranexamic acid and bakuchiol for the best dark spot defence. 3% tranexamic acid, 5% niacinamide and 0.5% bakuchiol to target acne scars super fast! I love how gentle yet effective it is. And the results speak for themselves!

Its a high concentration which did irritate my akin at first. The best way to use it is to ease into it: use it 2x a week and then slowly build upto every other day.

I love this in the summertime when my combo skin is its oiliest! This is what all 10% niacinamide serums should strive to be. I used it every other night (when I wasn’t using retinoid) to help my skin heal, and it never irritated me or caused any purging. I noticed a visible difference in my acne scars within the first 2 weeks!

The mugwort smell can be off-putting for some. My boyfriend hates that smell lol 

1. This re-formulation has been tested to be SPF 50+ PA++++, has physical filters and skin-loving ingredients like mugwort, niacinamide (2%), calendula, green tea, allantoin & squalane. 

2. This is especially nice if you have really sensitive skin and aren’t fond of chemical filters in SPF. 

3. No white cast
4. Has the nice mugwort smell I love
5. Great packaging, easy to dispense.


I wish it had more skin-loving ingredients for acne-prone skin like niacinamide, allantoin, centella or even green tea. The formula is quite simple, which means it doesn’t multitask.

This serum changed my hydration game this winter like nothing else! I&#39;ve tried other hyaluronic acid serums, but the lasting effect of this is next level. Little goes a long way, so it took a long time for me to get through this travel size, but the moment it ran out I rushed to my nearest shoppers for the big bottle!
