Yes, retinol and other actives like Vitamin C, BHA, AHA, etc can cause purging which is when the skin reacts negatively to the active and breaks out.
Your skin has to adjust and get used to you using this new active you've introduce into your routine and that's why it's breaking out.

this! don't let the product just because it's causing purging. things get worse before getting better, just give it time!!
the thing is, diferenciate if it's purging or if it's a bad reaction. for Me, a bad reaction is when it's causing my skin to be sensitive, little small texture and redness
