Are there any ingredients you're not a fan of?

We always talk beneficial aspects of cosmetics and ingredients used in beauty products, but every person has ingredients and products they don't like. Estheticians or cosmetologists aren't better. I think this discussion might help all of us find the reasons why some products or ingredients don't work for us Niacinamide Do you also think that niacinamide is in every product? I'm not a fan of niacinamide, although it has great properties for all ages and all skin conditions. It helps with acne, brightens the skin, and most importantly - it's a water-soluble vitamin. The problem I have is the amount of niacinamide in our skincare routines. Brands are trying to put the biggest amounts of niacinamide in products without thinking that we already have 2-5% of niacinamide in other products in the routine. The thing is that the majority of research is based on the lower concentration of niacinamide, we know how well it works for skin in 4-5% concentration. If your skin is red after a skincare routine, the problem might be in niacinamide - especially for sensitive skin, niacinamide concentrations above 2% might be problematic. It all depends on concentration and formulation. Zinc If you have acne-prone skin, then zinc is an ingredient you have to try. In some cases of acne or allergies zinc supplements might be needed (remember that before adding supplements to your daily routine, it's good to do a blood test and consult a doctor or specialist like a dietitian or nutritionist), but normally in diet, it's better to just eat food rich in zinc than use a supplement. Zinc doesn't only work from the inside, it can be also used as a spot treatment. Lots of companies are mixing zinc with niacinamide. Even if zinc is helpful, in some cases zinc can make your acne worse. If you have such problems, switch zinc treatments to calamine ones. Wheat Oil - Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil I enjoy using oils in skincare and haircare, but each oil won't fit every person the same. I'm not a fan of "Comedogenic rankings" because the comedogenity of ingredients was tested on rabbit's ears. Our skin is not as sensitive as rabbit ears. Why I don't like this ingredient is simple - wheat can be problematic for people with food allergies, celiac disease or Crohn's disease. It's also a very heavy oil and the only people I see this oil can work are people with super dry skin. A better choice is squalane - an ingredient that naturally occurs in our sebum. Glycolic Acid Glycolic Acid is a great ingredient, it's the best AHA available because it has a small molecule, which makes it more powerful. Not every skin is going to tolerate it. If you have sensitive skin then mandelic acid can work better for you. Another option is PHA instead of AHA. Sometimes milder products used for a longer amount of time is better than quick results on the product with higher concentration. Let me know which ingredients you don't like and why

I’m piggybacking off of you. I’m no longer a fan of salicylic acid because when I was a teen I got a Clinique acne treatment kit that had a chock full of salicylic acid. Due to the constant use of it my skin doesn’t like it.

I agree with you on the wheat germ oil. I am very sensitive to all things gluten. My skin is also really sensitive to Niacinimide serum. I can use it but only sparingly.

I didn't really know gluten in skincare is a problem until my coworker was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I can't eat gluten so I only avoid lip products that contains wheat oil, but for people with Crohn's disease this ingredient in skincare is a no

I’m not a fan of hyaluronic acid because it just doesn’t do much for me. I prefer beta-glucan and glycerin for hydration. Also not a fan of AHA for my skincare (in bodycare I like it) because it flares up my rosacea.

Amazing article! Thank you for sharing! 🧡 I would add microplastics, it’s almost everywhere and honestly, nowadays there are so many alternatives. We do not need microplastics in our skincare or makeup. Sometimes I really like the product and active ingredient, and brand’s approach… but then I find microplastics in the list of ingredients and “ahh why? you almost made it to my favourites shelf! 😔”

Not a fan of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C🥴 Hyaluronic acid. I've heard a lot of opinions about it, mostly good. But I heard from one dermatologist that this ingredient does not have enough laboratory tests and there is no evidence that it is safe. According to some studies, it may cause cancer. But there were talking about injections of hyaluronic acid. Niacinamide did not show any effect on my skin - I see no reason to use it. Vitamin C is harmful for me personally. I'm allergic to it. Not only for cosmetics with vitamin C, but also for dietary supplements and even citrus fruits((. Sometimes I use vitamin C serums, but I never use them more than once a week.

It's the first time I hear about HA being related to cancer, I would say even more - I found research paper that says "high molecular weight HA (over 500kDa) has anti-angiogenic properties". Hyaluronic Acid has big number of research but the problem is in one detail. Hyaluronic Acid comes in different sizes, I believe that the dermatologist was referring to research that was comparing different molecular weights of HA, LMW-HA (Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid) can increase proliferation of cancer cells which means nothing else than LMW-HA supports cancer cells. I saw one research on this topic so I guess I'll have to search for more since the more papers are behind something, the more legit it is. But as with everything, the problem with HA is in size of molecules. It's nothing new since even few years ago there was a big discussion if low or ultra low molecular size HA is okay for the skin, because the smaller the molecule is, the easier it should get through layers of the skin. Is it a good thing? Not really, because it can cause some irritation and usually smaller particles are used in injections. If you have allergic reactions to vitamin C then it's better to switch to other alternatives, there are many great ingredients with same properties to choose from :)
