i dont have any experience with retinol but for exfoliation i use salicylic acid (0.2% and/or 0.5%) everyday.
for beginners i would suggest to use it at night on alternate days first to build up tolerance then slowly increase the frequency (i believe both retinol & exfoliator work similarly)

I started retinol once a week and slowly built up from there to almost daily now.
exfoliants I almost use daily lie serums etc but they have low dosages.

@Filz I use two interchangeably.
drunk elephant which is on the pricier side but it is like a thick cream.
also I use The Ordinary one but this one is liquid and when you first put it on it is a bit greasy. if I don’t have time to wait in between retinol and moisturizer I don’t like using the TO one.
for exfoliant I use Sunday Riley.

I used both retinol and exfoliant 3 times a week, like now I used retinol then the other day I will go to acid. Just like that
I used retinol from local brand in my country, seems like I won't purchase it again because I start to using tretinoin recently. For exfoliant I used The Ordinary Mandelic Acid, this is kind of mild acid, need a long time to see visible result but this kind of acid don't give me any bad reaction. I can't handle strong acid such BPO or BHA

I use retinol once a week and chemical exfoliant twice . I recommend these. very effective. some are strong so use with caution. always patch test before trying new products. wear high SPF sunscreen in the morning.
