Ombrelle Ultra Light Advanced Weightless Face Lotion SPF 60

product review positives
🌱 Garnier is a legacy brand started in 1904 in France. They have mostly been a hair care company, but since the 1990s have expanded into skincare, suncare and cosmetics. 🌱 Claims: Sulfate-free,” Allergen-free”, Fragrance-free, Cruelty-free. Broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Hypoallergenic** and non-comedogenic 🌱 Key Ingredients: This is a chemical sunscreen that has 5 different UV filters. (Skin Deep hazard rating) Homosalate 10% (3) Octisalate 5% (2) Octocrylene 5% (2) Avobenzone: 3% (1) Oxybenzone: 3% (8) 🌱 pH: Unknown 🌱 Texture: A thin liquid that dries down to a matte finish. There’s no white caste, but it does feel… grainy? It’s hard to say, it feels like the silica in there keeps separating or doesn’t want to fully dissolve. Garnier provides a bead in the bottle to help shake it. Maybe they should take the silica out. Just a thought. 🌱 Scent: Unscented, smells like sunscreen ingredients. 🌱 Price: $20CA for 50mL or $0.40 / mL Rather pricey, considering how little you get. I have luxury serums that cost less than 40 cents per droplet. 🌱 Application: This is the rotary phone of liquid sunscreens. Everything about it is decades behind current trends in skincare. From the inclusion of Oxybenzone and silica to the fact that it doesn’t play well with skincare products underneath. If you use it alone or under makeup, it performs fine. But as soon as you include something like a hyaluronic toner or vitamin C underneath, this formula just wilts and gives up. Being Spf 60 with 5 UV filters, it does provide adequate broad spectrum protection, but it doesn’t provide any skin-loving ingredients like Cica or antioxidants. It is absolute bare-bones sun protection and nothing else. 🌱 Packaging: Normally I don’t care much about the aesthetics of packaging if the product is functional and accessible, but I felt the need to note just how… cheap this look is. Without the stickers pasted on, this plastic bottle would have nothing to set it apart. You can see very obvious veins of plastic where it came out of the mold. I can understand if packaging is cut down to pass on the savings to the customer, but Garnier wants to charge 40 cents for a single drop. 🌱 Accessibility: The oblong shape of the bottle is quite accessible, but the twist off cap is small and smooth, which can be difficult for wet hands. The bottle has a bead inside for shaking, and a low-flow nozzle. Sustainability: You’d have to grab some pliers and take the flow nozzle out to remove the shaker bead, otherwise the bottle can’t be recycled at all. 🚫 NOT reef-safe for waterway swimming🚫 🌱 Overall: Why talk about mediocre or bad products? I want my followers to know I have honest opinions, and I won’t hype up a product if I don’t think it’s up to the job. I also want to show why the products I do like are so good, because when you place them next to the sunscreen-next-door, it’s easy to see why they stand out. I hope the folks at Garnier are listening, because these Korean companies are coming in fast to capture the market.
product review negatives
🌱 4 of the 5 UV filters are quite safe. However, Oxybenzone, an old ingredient, causes irritation and endocrine disruption. There are better chemical UV filters these days! North American companies just need to step up. 🌱 This product has alcohol, but no more than needed for a liquid sunscreen. 🌱 Since this product contains Oxybenzone and alcohol, I would not call it hypoallergenic or allergen-free.
