Overnight Brightening Mask

product review positives
Pipette is an up-and-coming brand featuring products directed toward babies and new moms, but their products are growing in popularity across a wide range of customers, and for good reason! Their focus is on using gentle, quality ingredients that are safe for infants--so it stands to reason that those products would be good for adults, too. You've probably seen their ads on Instagram. They have their own website which often has sales (on top of their products already being quite affordable), and they are also available at Target, so if you're curious to try them out, you have many opportunities! After I switched to a stronger retinol, my skin became too sensitive to use my usual acid peel (The Ordinary's AHA/BHA). I was interested in this product because it still still provides chemical exfoliation due to the lactic and malic acids, but it also contains moisturizing ingredients to soothe the skin, such as shea butter, glycerin, squalane, and oat. Chemical exfoliation is known for being more gentle than physical exfoliation, because it chemically breaks the bonds between dead skin cells, loosening them and allowing them to be washed away. Physical exfoliation, however, can easily cause microtears and other microscopic injuries to the skin, damaging it in the long run. Both kinds of exfoliation can be damaging to the skin if used incorrectly, but this product contains a lower concentration of acid than strong peels like TO's, making it gentler. Shea butter, glycerin, and squalane are well known ingredients for keeping skin moisturized, and squalane has the added benefit of supporting the skin barrier, all of which helps to counteract any harsh effects that might be caused by the acids. Oat helps with this as well; in addition to sealing in moisture, it soothes any irritation that might be experienced with this product. It comes in a tube with a pump dispenser, which I like because the pump makes the packaging less messy than a normal tube, and it prevents any air or germs from contaminating the product. I also like that the tube is opaque to prevent any light from entering and degrading the ingredients. It's easy to dispense the correct amount. The mask does not have any added dyes, but it does have a yellow/light orange color. I really took a chance on this mask: Because it's safe for pregnant and nursing moms to use, I figured it would be gentle enough, but I was a little wary that the shea butter in it would cause my oily skin to break out, because shea butter can be really thick. However, I've been using it about once a week for a month now, and so far, so good! It stings a tiny bit going on, but that fades quickly, and I wake up with soft skin. No breakouts, no purging, no added irritation even when I use strong retinol on other nights.
product review negatives
Because it's so gentle, it's not as effective as stronger acids, but that also means my skin barrier doesn't get damaged. It does have a fragrance, sort of a sweet citrus smell. I like the smell a lot, but some people may be sensitive to it.
